This establishes the implementation date for a fundamental change in the taxation of married couples in Switzerland.

The Federal Act on Individual Taxation was approved in the referendum of 8 March 2026, with 54.23% voting in favour. The reform affects both direct federal tax and cantonal and municipal taxes.

What Will Change Under Individual Taxation?

Under the current system, married couples are taxed jointly. Their incomes are combined and taxed according to the tax rates applicable to married couples.

From 2032, spouses will be taxed individually, irrespective of their marital status. The main changes include:

Separate tax returns: Each spouse will be required to file an individual tax return.

Income: Employment income, pensions and other income will generally be allocated to the person legally entitled to receive them.

Assets: Assets and the income generated from them will be allocated according to civil-law ownership.

Debts and interest expenses: Tax allocation will follow the relevant civil-law relationships.

Tax rates: The existing special tax rates for married couples will be replaced by a system of taxation independent of marital status.

Individual taxation will also apply to married couples who continue to live together and share their household finances.

What Will Change for Direct Federal Tax?

The reform also introduces changes to tax rates and certain deductions:

Tax rates for low and middle incomes will be reduced.

Tax rates for high incomes will increase slightly.

The child tax deduction will increase from CHF 6’800.00 to CHF 12’000.00 per child.

Existing marriage-related tax rates and deductions will be adapted to the new system.

The actual tax implications will depend in particular on the distribution of income between spouses, their assets and the deductions claimed.

Who Will Benefit and Who May Face Higher Taxes?

Individual taxation will not necessarily reduce the tax burden for every married couple.

Married couples with two similar incomes: These couples may benefit from separate taxation, particularly for direct federal tax purposes.

Single-income married couples: Depending on income levels and family circumstances, their tax burden may increase.

Married couples with significantly different incomes: The implications will depend primarily on the distribution of income and the new tax rates.

Unmarried individuals: Their tax burden may also change as a result of adjustments to tax rates and deductions.

The implications for cantonal and municipal taxes cannot yet be assessed conclusively, as the cantons must first adapt their tax legislation and rates.

Why Will the Reform Only Be Implemented in 2032?

The Federal Council has chosen the latest implementation date permitted by law to give the cantons sufficient time to prepare for the transition.

The necessary measures include:

Amending cantonal tax legislation and, where applicable, tax rates and social deductions

Adapting IT systems and tax assessment procedures

Preparing for separate tax returns and individual assessments of married taxpayers

Adjusting administrative processes within the tax authorities

Until the new legislation enters into force, the existing rules on the joint taxation of married couples will continue to apply.

What Does the Reform Mean for Tax Planning?

Individual taxation may have implications for the long-term tax, wealth and pension planning of married individuals.

Particular attention should be paid to:

Ownership of real estate and other assets

Allocation of investment income and interest expenses

Employment arrangements and income distribution between spouses

Individual pension contributions and available tax deductions

Long-term tax planning in connection with retirement

Recommended Actions

Married taxpayers should take the reform into account when considering their long-term tax and retirement planning.

However, the transition scheduled for 2032 does not generally require immediate changes to existing asset ownership or income arrangements.

Once the cantonal implementing legislation and tax rates become available, an individual comparison of the tax burden under the current and future systems is recommended.

The official communications and statutory provisions issued by the Swiss federal authorities shall prevail.

Sources:

<a href="https://www.estv.admin.ch/de/individualbesteuerung"
